SPIF Aims for Surge in Student Participation Rates as Pledge Drive Kicks Into Gear
Issue date: 4/21/08 Section: Insider
By the end of the week of April 21 - 25, SPIF will be a household name - at least at Wharton. That's because this week happens to be the SPIF Pledge Drive, a week-long publicity blitz aimed at driving up student awareness and contribution rates to the Summer Public Interest Fund (SPIF).
SPIF is funded almost entirely from funds raised within the student body to support fellow classmates doing summer internships in the public interest sector. This year's SPIF campaign aims to soundly beat the meager 21% participation rate of last year.
The poor rate of participation in last year's class is one of the most significant motivating factors for this year's board. Samir Mayur, current President of SPIF, notes: "I was deeply disappointed with last year's participation rate and decided that I wanted to help make a change. The SPIF Board members are working diligently to increase the Class of 2009's participation rate during this year's pledge drive. I am confident that, with our fellow classmates' support, we will be able to achieve our goals."
The Board's approach has been to involve as many students as possible in the effort to get the word out about SPIF. SPIF Ambassadors have been designated in all cohorts to make personal appeals and convey important information about the program to cohort-mates. Look for the Ambassadors in your Cohort, distinguished by the bright red "Be SPIFfy" buttons they'll be wearing.
Also requiring mass participation was the making of the highly anticipated "What would you give up for SPIF?" video - be sure to access the link to the video from our website, www.whartonspif.org.
Pledge Drive will culminate with a bang at Thursday's SPIF Pub, co-sponsored with the Australia-New Zealand (ANZ) Club. Announcements will be made about the class' overall participation rates, and which cohorts are leading the pack.
During Pledge Drive, the SPIF board members will be available at all times to answer any questions you have about the program. The SPIF team will be stationed in MBA Café during lunch hour this week, sporting unmistakable, bright-red SPIF T-shirts. Do stop by to get more information, and to support your fellow classmates.
Let's use Pledge Drive to obliterate last year's 21% mark and to further cement the Class of 2009's growing legacy as the Class that Cares.
