The spirit of giving was in the air across the Penn community and 50 needy children had a merrier holiday because of that generosity. Wharton partnered with the Penn Dental School and the Delaware Valley Children's Charity (www.dvcconline.org/holidayprogram/holidayprogram.htm) to provide gifts for children in need this holiday season.

The DVCC sponsored over 6,000 children this winter and according to their website, this number continues to grow each year.
Fortunately, more sponsors are found each year. This year Wharton became a part of the magic of the Angel Tree Project.

Special recognition should be given to Angela Arnold, who spearheaded the effort on behalf of the Wharton community service reps and made giving a little bit easier.

Each cohort was asked to sponsor at least three children and based on information
given about each child, including age, sex, hobbies, favorite color, and any special needs they may have, buy presents
for him or her.

While it was heartbreaking to realize that many of these children were asking for winter coats, it was fun and rewarding
to run through Target picking out colors and styles for that special someone. While I don't know if teenagers of today and Wharton students share the same taste in music, games, or videos, I do know that each person who contributed to the program helped make a difference in a child's life.

In fact, the Wharton community bought presents totaling over $4,500 with Cohort I sponsoring seven children, the most of any cohort.

I can say from personal experience that this program was one of the highlights of the first semester, and I had a lot of fun shopping for the children. I hope that we can all reflect on the knowledge that despite the pressures of grade non-disclosure, interview preparation, and a huge tuition bill, we are all fortunate to be here.

There are so many in the world who can't afford winter coats or other small pleasures in life and it is great to know that we all care enough to give back to the community around us.

I hope that we can continue this great tradition and rally around other great community service activities that will be occurring this semester, including "Rebuilding Together," MBA Games (benefits the North Carolina Special Olympics and sponsored by Fuqua Business School), and many others.
