On Thursday January 18, the WGA voted overwhelmingly in favor of maintaining the Grade Non-Disclosure (GND) policy. With a participation rate of 84% and approval by 94% of respondents, the vote re-affirms the continued commitment of the Wharton
MBA student body to the principle behind the policy: GND serves to facilitate a community of cooperation and support, emphasize learning as the prime directive of education, encourage extra-curricular growth and development and promote the use of recruiting criteria that go beyond grades. The vote should also help allay fears expressed when the yearly re-certification feature was added in 2006: it was thought there could be a weakening of students resolve especially with the change in the administrations position. The 2006 vote had a participation rate of 84% and an approval by 90% of voters.
WGA President Hassan El-Houry, in announcing
the results of the vote, assured students of the WGA's commitment to upholding
GND as part of its mandate from students.
WGA Executive Council Minutes
The WGA Executive Council held its first meeting in 2007 on Wednesday January
10 with President Hassan El- Houry presiding.
Bunmi Obiora provided an update on the Wharton Journal Charter which was due to be presented for approval. The Charter was subsequently made available via email and has been approved electronically on Sunday
January 14th 2007 by unanimous vote.
First Year Member at Large Rami Elghandour
presented some concerns raised by the 2008 Class. The first concerned the perceived lack of a framework for Leadership
Development opportunities at the Wharton School. Leadership Fellows who were present volunteered to work with the Leadership Program Office to increase access to and awareness of theĀ abundant opportunities. On the issue of higher interest rates on Citiassist loans made out to international students, Ajay Candade (ED Diversity) and Zachary Klehr (ED Intergovernmental) provided some background to the situation. The current rate paid by international students is negotiated for the entire University of Pennsylvania population rather than the Wharton School specifically. The Financial Aid office has been made aware of the disparity with peer Business school rates.
Mike Redd recommended that the WGA Executive Council seek clarification from the administration on the recent changes in a number of prominent leadership positions and their potential impact on the Wharton MBA Community, and agreed to lead the initiative.
The meeting was adjourned and the next metering will be held on Wednesday, January
24, 2007.
