The Wharton '08 flag football team claimed the Grad League Football crown on Monday night with a convincing 20-6 win over the Medical School's "Bonesaw" team at Franklin Field. The team was lead by quarterback Brendan Dillon, who threw one touchdown and ran for another, while also leading a spirited defensive charge.
Linebacker Matt Blank started the scoring with a 30 yard interception return for a touchdown on the opening series of the game. Tight end Fred Ronnau caught the extra point to extend the WG'08 lead to 7-0. The two teams traded defensive stands for the balance of the first half, with an interception by linebacker Hans Hartvickson thwarting one Bonesaw drive and back to back sacks by defensive tackle Andy "The Refrigerator" Cohen ending another.
The offense found its rhythm in the second half, as Dillon again marched the team down the field, connecting on long passes to receivers Tom Wojcik and Joe Savig before finding Ronnau in the end zone for a seven yard touchdown. Hartvickson then caught a deflected ball in traffic to convert the extra point and extend the lead to 14-0. Dillon capped WG'08's next possession with a 5 yard touchdown run to push the team to a comfortable 20-0 lead.
The fierce WG'08 defense frustrated Bonesaw's hurry-up offense, as safeties Wojcik and Savig ran the "Cover Two" zone to near perfection. The opposition finally scored a largely ceremonial touchdown with under a minute remaining to close the scoring at 20-6.
The win caps a 5-1 season for Wharton '08, who advanced to the championship game after dispatching the Dental School's "Pennsylvania Dutch Ovens" 14-6 in the league semi-finals. While the Wharton squad was exultant after their victory, they have vowed to defend their title next year and plan to spend the off-season crafting a more creative name.
