Wharton MBAs are not generally known for athletic prowess. Sure, sure, we have the Warthogs, Wildmen and the Whatnots, but for many, our most rigorous workout is emailing at warp speed and jamming formulas into our finance calculators.
Then there are those of us who compete in bodybuilding contests.
Last Tuesday, Chris Hill, Wharton/Lauder Class of 2008, was named second in line to the Penn Bodybuilding throne, after dominating a field of over fourteen competitors brave enough to bare their souls and biceps to a packed auditorium of screaming fans.
The fifteenth annual Mr. and Ms. Penn Bodybuilding Contest was held on November 7 at the Annenberg Auditorium. Hosted by the Penn Track and Field Program, the event brought together members of the University of Pennsylvania student community to celebrate athletic and physical excellence.
Buff aspirants were divided into four classes: short males, short females, tall males and tall females. Most Penn schools were represented, although the bulk of contestants, as well as the judges, came from the Track and Field program.
As Mr. Hill was representing Wharton and Lauder, he enjoyed the support of his own section of rabid fans. Alexandre Costabile, fellow Wharton and Lauderite, noted, "Going to the Mr. and Ms. Penn contest on Tuesday night was probably the best way to prepare for the accounting test [the following morning]."
Well oiled and tanned contestants flexed and posed as a group in front of judges, and then performed a 90 second solo routine set to custom music. One contestant flexed his pectorals in time to his music, inciting an almost hysterical euphoria from the elated crowd. Others trotted out to hip-hop, country music and the ever-reliable Rocky soundtrack.
In reflecting on his first foray into competitive bodybuilding, Hill commented: "It was great that... there was such an overwhelming amount of support from my classmates. I look forward to coming in bigger and stronger next year." We'll be there to cheer you on Chris!
