It's 5:50 AM on a rainy Saturday morning and seven Wharton students have dragged themselves from the warmth of their beds to meet in Center City. You might wonder if these are just over-ambitious first-years getting a jump on the Marketing case or maybe second years anxious to update their resumes in anticipation of that upcoming EIS, right?
I assure you, its neither. This is undoubtedly a dedicated bunch, but on this morning the mission is to ride 75 miles along the New Jersey countryside to support a great cause.
That's right; it's the 26th Annual 'MS 150 City to Shore Bike Tour' which benefits the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation of the Delaware Valley. The Wharton "Weapons of MS Destruction" team is on the way to join over 7000 cyclists and 1200 volunteers to raise money and awareness for this devastating disease.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system affecting the brain and spinal cord. MS is usually diagnosed in people between the ages of 20-50; symptoms include numbness, blurred vision, paralysis and blindness. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatments are giving hope to those affected by the disease.
The Wharton team, sponsored by the Outdoor Club, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Wharton Women in Business, raised over $2,300 to show our support for the Tour.
This year's team consisted of first-years Ben Daverman, Seth Demain, Josephine Harada, Eric Redline, and Charlie Rose, and second-years Laurie Kaye and Lisa Laich. One of the best outcomes of this event was spending quality time with our fellow riders, not only while pedaling, but at the rest stops along the way.
I think we all felt as though we found some new friends, and some of us who spent the night in Ocean City probably learned more than we cared to know about each other.
Some of the highlights included deep conversations about life at Wharton, swing dancing at rest stop #4, and getting off the bike (lots of sore butts today) at the finish line in Ocean City. Three of us, Seth, Josephine, and I, decided we were gluttons for punishment and decided to stay the night and ride the 75 miles back on Sunday morning.
I think the most memorable part of this year's tour was dinner at Periwinkle's - our 5 course meal left even Seth, the human garbage disposal, full. But we did manage to eat all of the main course and most of the dessert. We all made it back in time to actually get some homework in and were all able to walk to class on Monday morning.
So for all of you first years who missed this event, be sure to get on your bikes and mark your calendars for September 29th and 30th 2007. Seth, Josephine, and I will be there. Will you?
